Roasted Poha Chivda

Poha chivda is a popular and easy snack in India. It is made at all times of the year, whenever you feel like it but on Diwali occasion it tastes more delicious than any other time. Homemade Poha chivda always tastes better and more delicious.

My mom adds special touch to Poha Chivda. Her secret ingredient is Fried Coriander leaves powder. She fries coriander leaves till crisp and grind them till a fine powder. Then mix this powder into Poha Chivda evenly. That gives nice green colour to poha chivda and adds extra flavor to it that will refresh you from tongue to toe. This green poha chivda recipe is always loved and relished by my friends and family.

But today I am sharing Maharashtrian style quick low fat poha chivda. This version of poha chivda is made during Diwali festival as savory snack. In next post, will share my mom’s version of chivda.

Preparation Time: 10 min || Cooking Time: 20 min || Serves: 5-6 people

Thin Poha Chivda Ingredients:

  • Thin poha – 250gm
  • Roasted Chana Dal – 2 tbsp
  • Whole raw peanuts - 1/4 cup
  • Coconut slices - 1/8 cup
  • Cashews – 1/8 cup
  • Raisins – 1 tbsp
  • Powdered Sugar – 2-3 tbsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  • Mustard Seeds – 11/2 tsp
  • Asafoetida - 1/2 tsp
  • Red chili powder - 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
  • Spicy Small Green chilies – 10 finely chopped.
  • Oil – 6 tbsp
  • Salt to taste (nearly 1 heaped tsp

How to prepare Thin Poha Chivda:

  • In small batches sift the poha and keep it aside so that the powdered poha flakes are removed.
  • In a large kadai add 2 tbsp oil and fry the poha on low heat till they become crispy. Do not increase the heat as it would cause the poha to shrink. Keep the fried poha aside.
  • Now add 2 tbsp oil in the vessel and individually fry peanuts, roasted chana dal, cashews, dry coconut slices and raisins and keep aside.
  • Add 1 tbsp oil in the vessel and when it is hot add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. When they splutter add turmeric, hing and green chillies. Fry till green chillies become crispy.
  • Now add fried poha and rest of the fried Ingredients, sugar and salt as per taste. Gently mix so that the fried poha does not break. Switch off the Gas.
  • The Poha Chivda is ready, store it in an air tight container and serve when you have guests at home.
